Western Montana Road Trip Itinerary Episode One of Two – On the Road with Lou

Day 1: Arrival in Kalispell – Gateway to the Crown Fly into Glacier Park International Airport (FCA) in Kalispell. Pick up your rental, grab a coffee, and take a deep breath—welcome to Big Sky Country. Optional: Overnight in Kalispell Great spot to get your bearings, stock up on supplies, and rest before heading into the wild.

Day 2–4: Glacier National Park Drive just 45 minutes to Glacier National Park, a place that needs no filter and deserves no rush. Explore turquoise lakes, dramatic peaks, and the legendary Going-to-the-Sun Road. Must-Do Highlights: Lake McDonald Avalanche Lake or Grinnell Glacier hike Scenic drive + wildlife viewing Time Needed: Minimum: 1 day for scenic drive & short hike Ideal: 2–3 days to fully explore trails and regions

Day 5: Flathead Lake – Polson Stopover Head south to Flathead Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. Spend your time lakeside in Polson, with options for paddling, swimming, or just soaking up the serenity. Optional Stops: Miracle of America Museum Sunset picnic or boat rental Time Needed: Quick stop: 2–3 hours Full experience: 1 day Overnight in Polson – Relax with lakeside charm and small-town Montana vibes.

Day 6: Garnet Ghost Town – A Step Back in Time From Polson, drive about 2 hours to Garnet Ghost Town—one of the best-preserved ghost towns in the West. Wander creaky cabins, old saloons, and feel the weight of a past that still echoes in the hills. Time Needed: 2–3 hours for photos & exploration Half-day if you love history or want to hike nearby.

Day 7: Butte – Mining Heart, Irish Soul A 2-hour drive brings you to Butte, a gritty gem packed with layers of Montana history. See the Berkeley Pit, explore underground tunnels, and visit museums or old mansions that whisper of boomtown days. Don’t Miss: The World Museum of Mining Copper King Mansion Butte’s Irish heritage and vibrant street history Time Needed: Half-day for highlights Recommended: Stay overnight to take it slow and catch Butte at night .


Day 8: Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park Just 40 minutes from Butte, Montana’s first state park surprises with epic limestone cave systems and stunning views above ground too. Activities: Guided cavern tours (bring a jacket—it's 50°F inside!) Scenic hikes and picnic spots Time Needed: 2–3 hours for the tour Half-day if hiking or relaxing;.

Day 9: Pictograph Cave State Park – Prehistoric Art, Modern Peace Drive 3 hours to Billings and make a stop at Pictograph Cave State Park. Explore ancient cave art, walk the peaceful loop trail, and take in the silence of a sacred space. Time Needed: 1.5–2 hours

Day 10: Wrap-Up in Billings Finish strong in Billings, Montana’s largest city. It’s the perfect place to rest, reflect, and fly home via Billings Logan International Airport (BIL). Enjoy a good meal, take one last stroll, and maybe even start planning your return.

Travel Tips: This route works just as well in reverse—start in Billings, end in Kalispell Summer and early fall offer the best weather and wildlife views Give yourself extra time at Glacier—you won’t regret it
